Right-handed pitcher Chad Green, 32, a teammate of Hyun-jin Ryu (36, Toronto Blue Jays), is on the verge of a return.
“Toronto will activate Green from the 60-day disabled list,” MLB Trade Rumors, Jays Journal and other local media outlets reported on Tuesday (Jan. 1).
Green, who was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 2013, was acquired by the New York Yankees via trade in 2015.
He started the 2016 season in the big leagues and went 2-4 with a 4.73 ERA in 12 games in his rookie year. A member of the Yankees’ bullpen through the 2022 season, he went on to appear in 272 games over seven seasons, posting a 33-22 record, 53 holds, 11 saves, and a 3.17 ERA.
He was eligible for free agency after last season and signed a two-year, $8.5 million deal with Toronto.
The deal is loaded with options. It could change depending on how the player and the club choose to exercise them. If Toronto picks up the team option after the 2023 season, it will be up to three years and $27 million.
The reason for the deal is that Green didn’t know if he would be able to play this season. He was rehabbing from elbow ligament reconstruction (Tommy John) surgery last May. Toronto couldn’t afford to take a chance on an uncertain Green, so they took a chance.
Your rehabilitation is complete. But just as he was about to return, he suffered an unfortunate injury. On March 9, Green made his final rehab start. He pitched the bottom of the fifth inning against the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox (affiliated with the Boston Red Sox).
With two outs, Greene gave up a bunt single to Ryan Fitzgerald. Before facing the next batter, Fitzgerald attempted to steal second, but catcher Tyler Heinemann threw to second, and the throw hit Green directly in the back of the head. Luckily, it didn’t lead to any major injuries. I had a normal conversation with the trainer.
But since the hit was to the head, he needed to be taken care of. He needs to be checked for a concussion. In Major League Baseball, a player suspected of suffering a concussion must rest for a week and pass tests before returning to the mound, regardless of the player’s doctor.
After recovering from his head injury, Green pitched 5⅔ innings in six more games. During this time, he gave up three runs, indicating that he was in good shape. He is expected to return soon.
According to Jays Journal, “It’s unclear exactly what Green’s role will be in Toronto, but he’s been a very reliable pitcher in the past. He’s thrown more than 80 innings, so hopefully he can bolster an already strong Blue Jays bullpen even more.”
According to local reports, he could be called up as early as tomorrow (Feb. 2).
That’s the same day that Ryu is scheduled to make his first start. Ryu will start against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado. Ryu has made a spectacular comeback from elbow surgery and has won three of his last four starts. He has erased concerns. His fastball averages just under 90 mph, but he’s been turning hitters away with his offspeed pitches. His curveball, which is 100 mph slower, is unhittable.바카라사이트
With his knife-edge stuff, Ryu posted a 2.25 ERA in August. That’s the best mark of any Toronto starter.
Through Day 1, Toronto is 73-61. They are 2.5 games behind the third-place Texas Rangers (75-58) in the American League wild-card race. While the Jays need Ryu’s help, they’ve also bolstered their bullpen.
