Yale MedTech High School in Andong, a small town of 150,000 people, has emerged as a “dark horse” in the 51st National High School Baseball Tournament, winning its first two national titles in a row.
Yale MedTech, the only baseball team in Andong City, defeated Yatap Go 3-2 in the first round of the tournament on the 18th, followed by a 5-3 victory over Woosin Go on the 22nd to advance to the round of 32.
Yale MedTech head coach Park Sung-gyun is a 20-year veteran of the Seongnam Middle and High School baseball team, and he told BONBO ahead of the tournament, “We will not be the bridesmaids of the strong teams. We may not be the strongest team, but we have prepared well. We’re going to surprise everyone,” and they did.
On June 18, Yale MedTech surprised everyone with a 7-6 victory over Gyeongbuk University in the Gyeongsangbuk-do Region B of the second half of the high school baseball weekend league at the Daegu Citizens Stadium baseball field. The victory proved to be no fluke.
Gyeongbuk Baseball Association President Uhm Woo-hwan said, “The reality of local teams is that they are not comparable to teams in the metropolitan area, where human and material resources are concentrated. Nevertheless, I applaud the coaching staff and players for working together to produce such an amazing result, and I am proud of them.”
Pitcher Lee Dong-yoon (3 years), who started against Woo Shin-shin, said, “We have been working really hard and trusting the coach. We may be from the countryside, but we’re not from the countryside. We won’t be beaten so easily. Whether it’s Incheon High or Daegu Sangwon High, we are confident no matter which team comes up.”메이저사이트
