Coach Jurgen Klopp, who has spent Liverpool’s hottest time since the launch of the English Premier League (EPL), will take down the Liverpool baton at the end of this season.
Liverpool officially announced on its official website on the 26th (Korea Standard Time) that Klopp will leave the team after the 2023-2024 season.꽁머니
Liverpool said, “Klopp informed the club that he wanted to leave after the 2023-2024 season, and decided to step down after this season,” adding, “Klopp will continue to lead the remaining 2023-2024 season, and then put an end to his glorious eight-and-a-half years. Under his leadership, Liverpool has won six major championship trophies so far.”
Klopp re-signed with Liverpool in 2022, and his current contract was about two years away until 2026, but he expressed his intention to resign without regret without completing the remaining contract period. Liverpool club seems to have accepted Klopp’s resignation in respect of his opinion.
Klopp, who began his leadership career in 2001 when he was appointed as a manager at Mainz, continued his coaching job with joy and sadness on the German stage, including Mainz’s promotion to the Bundesliga in the 2003-2004 season and the relegation to the Bundesliga 2 in the 2006-2007 season.
Dortmund, which paid attention to Klopp’s leadership in Mainz, embraced Klopp. After taking charge of Dortmund in 2008, Klopp ended his Bundesliga victory, which was dominated by Bayern Munich, and led Dortmund to its best days in the 2010s by winning the Bundesliga in the 2010-2011 season and the 2011-2012 season. Since then, Klopp and Dortmund surprised Europe by reaching the final of the European Champions League in the 2012-2013 season.
Liverpool again appointed Klopp, who ended his time with Dortmund, as manager. Liverpool was desperate for an EPL championship trophy at the time, so they had high expectations for Klopp’s ability in Dortmund. Klopp led Liverpool to lift several trophies. He won the European Champions League in the 2018-2019 season, and even the EPL championship trophy, which Liverpool fans so hoped for, was given to the team in the 2019-2020 season.
Leading Liverpool, Klopp has accumulated 199 wins, 74 draws and 44 losses in 317 matches in the EPL, accumulating 671 points, and earning an average of 2.12 points per match. This is better than his record of 162 wins, 84 draws, and 94 losses in 340 matches in the Bundesliga, led by Mainz and Dortmund.
Klopp has already announced the possibility of leaving Liverpool last year. “When I was talking about the next transfer and looking around where to go for the next summer camp together, I thought, ‘I’m not sure if I’ll be here.’ I was surprised, too. He started thinking about breaking up, and maybe it’s because last season was difficult. However, when other clubs said, ‘I’m grateful for everything, but we have to break up,’ he said, expressing his concerns about managing Liverpool.
In the end, he chose to complete his companionship with Liverpool after this season at the end of his worries.
Regarding the announcement of his resignation, Klopp said on Liverpool’s official website, “I understand that many people will be shocked when they first hear the news. But I can explain it clearly. Or at least try to explain it. I love everything about this club, I love everything about the city. I love everything about the fans, and I love the team and the staff. I love everything. But what I made this decision shows that I am confident that this is what I have to do.” He first expressed his affection for Liverpool.
He cited exhaustion of energy as the reason for his resignation. Klopp said, “I’m running out of energy right now. I don’t have a problem with energy right now. It’s a fact that I have to announce it one day, but I’m fine right now. Still, I know I can’t continue to do this. Through the years, all the time, and everything we’ve gone through together, all the respect and love have grown, and what’s left between us is trust. It’s too big,” expressing regret along with the reason for his decision.
Asked if the announcement of the decision could negatively affect the team’s performance for the rest of the season, Klopp explained, “I understand the meaning of that question 100 percent, but I would say it’s totally up to us. A similar situation happened in Dortmund. After this announcement, we will also have a press conference. After that, I will devote 100% of my energy to this season. We can do it, there may be so many things to do, and there may be ㅣ thoughts outside of us that hinder us from doing what we do, but it is all about us. The way we have grown over the past few years has been special, exceptional. I really want to perform at the highest level, and I want the club to, and I hope this decision will not get in the way.”
“It’s like a fairy tale to finish as a coach at Liverpool and it’s very hard to plan. It’s impossible and hard to reach, but it’s possible when you’re 100 percent committed to everything, and devoted your whole life to it. That’s what I did. I’m still an ordinary person, but I haven’t lived a normal life for too long. I don’t want to wait until I’m too old to live a normal life. I think this is the right moment for me, and I think it’s the right moment for the club as well because I can’t work anymore next year. Then now I’m no longer the right person for the team,” he said, adding his worries about leaving the team.
