San Diego Padres fifth-year right-hander Pedro Avila is applauded by teammates after another strong outing.

San Diego fell to 0-3 against the Arizona Diamondbacks of the 2023 Major League Baseball (MLB) at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, U.S., on Wednesday (July 13).

Ha-Sung Kim, who started at second base and batted leadoff, went hitless in four at-bats. Starter Rich Hill didn’t make it out of the fourth inning. Hill suffered his 12th loss of the season (7-7) after allowing three runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Despite the loss, Avila, who took the mound after Hill, pitched the remaining two scoreless innings. Although the team lost, they avoided the bullpen drain of a starter’s early exit.

Avila pitched 4⅔ innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out no batters. The manager was pleased with his surprise performance.

“We’ll see,” manager Bob Melvin said. “I think he gained a lot of confidence,” Melvin said.

“I’m still not convinced, but it gives me a little more confidence,” said.

Avila, who made his big league debut in 2019, has yet to win a game. He pitched one game in 2019 and took a no-decision, and one game in 2021 and took a loss. So far, he has started both games.

Last season, he pitched two games in the middle relief role, going winless with a 4.50 ERA. This season, he has made five appearances before today’s game against Arizona. His one start came on April 2 against Colorado.바카라사이트

Hill was pulled early in the game, but Avila settled in to take over on the mound.

“Today was a really good day for me,” Avila said. I felt really good pitching today, and I’m going to try to get better,” Avila said.

He has a 0.98 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. “I’m staying strong mentally,” Avila said. It’s giving me the results I want,” he reflected.

Teammate and starting infielder Manny Machado applauded him, saying, “He’s really pitching well for us, for the organization.”
